I attend a church called ROCKharbor in Costa Mesa, California, where personal technology was incorporated into the worship services this past weekend. A lot of people have cell phones with them, often perceived as a distraction rather than a way to engage more worship. But it doesn’t have to be that way.
After the sermon on Mark 6, worshipers were invited to respond by texting in their stories of how God has shown His goodness and faithfulness during the storms of life. Many text messages were submitted as the worship team led in a closing set of songs. Selected text messages were displayed on the big screen while singing continued.
Wow! What an engaging way to see & hear of God’s work in the lives of others in the same room as we worshiped together.
On a tech note, this was done using Google Voice, a free service that gives you a web-based dashboard to view incoming text messages. There are certainly other ways to gather text messages, like giving out your cell phone number, but you might not want to do that.

Peter Park has been blogging about multicultural worship at redemptionboulevard.com since April 2009. He’s currently the worship director at Aldrich Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis, MN. I was encouraged to see his blog sharing resources and learnings from his experience in developing multicultural worship and got to capture this interview to learn more. Watch the video interview with Peter Park to learn what multicultural worship is and what it sounds like.
The latest issue of Worship Leader Magazine (June 2011) unpacks “12 Essentials to Engaging with God through Technology” using a book metaphor. And one of the articles, called chapters, was about about how new media multiples the power of prayer.
For your convenience, here are the links to websites and apps mentioned in that chapter:
Our on-line live chat-in show Tech Steward Tuesday kicked off today, and it’ll continue every week on Tuesdays at 2:00pm (Pacific) until July 11th, leading up to the conversations we’ll have on-site at MediaCon 2011 @ National Worship Leader Conference on July 18-21 in Kansas City. [update: watch the 1st episode on-demand]
These weekly shows leading up to MediaCon are designed to grow our understanding of how new media technologies are shaping worship communities and changing the job of worship leaders. And when it comes to new technologies, leading means learning.
Here’s a funny video of how someone familiar with old media ran into a learning curve with new media:
Mark your calendar and join our weekly live chat-in show starting Tuesday, June 7th at 2:00pm Pacific Time (4:00pm Central / 5:00pm Eastern) to jump-start our conversations about MediaCon 2011.
The MediaCon 2011 theme is engaging with God through technology and explores more thoughtfully about what happens when worship meets the digital world, and how will new technologies shape worship communities and change the job of the worship leader.
Each week we’ll cover topics from the forthcoming white paper by Worship Leader Magazine titled: “12 Principles for Worship Leaders: New Media Technologies in the Service of Worship“. See you on the Tech Steward live chat-in show on Tuesdays at 2:00pm Pacific!
